Long Island Retreats & Larder is born out of our passion for the land, our livestock and our crofting life. Whilst we work hard on our crofts here on South Uist, we also feel really privileged to live the life that we do and want to be able to share a little piece of that magic with you.

What started as a discussion on restoring one of the traditional thatched croft houses, quickly grew arms and legs as we chatted into the small hours about how visitors could have an authentic island experience as part of their visit. Many hours of discussions later, endless notes scribbled and google searches aplenty we drew up a business plan for a complete croft experience that we love and we hope you will too!

Our focus above all else is to allow you to step off the beaten track onto a road less travelled, allowing yourself to enjoy some “island time” and immerse yourself in the crofting way of life. Whether you choose to spend a couple of hours enjoying the cheeky characters of our Shetland ponies, soak up the flock to fibre story in our shearing demonstrations or simply absorb all the tales of yesteryear, what is certain is that you will leave with amazing memories and fond tales to tell.

Summer 2022 will see our croft and island experiences launch on the croft at Loch Skipport. Alongside this we will be developing the Larder product range, bringing you authentic island tastes with produce direct from the croft, including our homebred lamb and beef. The croft accommodation launch will follow as we lovingly restore the first of our croft buildings into a luxury off grid retreat.

As we launch the website and open tours for bookings there is still lots of work to be done on the ground. Every day is a labour of love, creating a business, experiences and products that we are proud to share with you. It’s only just the beginning of the Long Island Retreats & Larder story but we can’t wait for you to join us on the journey.
